Liminal Spaces is a multi-city participatory art project that uses puzzles, narrative media, and collaborative scavenger hunts to encourage participants to engage with their surroundings in unexpected ways, explore, and collaborate with one another, akin to the alternate reality created by The Jejune Institute in San Francisco, or Meow Wolf elsewhere. The project invites participants to experience familiar places with fresh eyes through a series of interconnected puzzles that combine storytelling, play, and discovery. Clues and prompts are distributed through a variety of media and encourage exploration and collaboration. Individual experiences are designed to be accessible to the public and to foster moments of surprise, curiosity, and shared joy in the real world. Inspired by immersive theater and alternate reality games the project explores how mystery and collective problem-solving can transform ordinary environments into stages for wonder and connection. Each city's multi-week long experience will stand alone, but broader themes and relationships that connect the works will gradually unfold into a larger mystery and narrative. The project emphasizes social engagement and public benefit by encouraging people to spend time outdoors, interact with local spaces and often-overlooked history, collaborate with strangers, and develop a renewed appreciation for their spaces. Themes of play, whimsy, and collective imagination are central. Initial activities in 2026 will take place in selected West Coast cities, with future expansions planned for additional US regions in 2027, developing a larger network of interconnected experiences that invite participants to contribute to a shared story and a contagious culture of curiosity.
