Listen Closely is a musicians’ collective dedicated to bringing communities together through live chamber music concerts. We believe that music has the power to strengthen communities and create meaningful connections between diverse people. Our concerts are highly accessible and inclusive because they take place in community gathering spaces and feature free or extremely affordable admission. In addition, we cultivate a concert atmosphere that is interactive, friendly, and intimate.
Founded in 2013 and led by its Co-Artistic Directors, cellist James Waldo and violist Rose Hashimoto, Listen Closely has a flexible roster of high-caliber artists. Our concerts are presented in partnership with different community spaces, including Dichter Pharmacy & Soda Shoppe, the Bruce Reynolds Memorial Garden, Holy Trinity Church, the YM & YWHA of Inwood and Washington Heights, the Inwood Greenmarket, and Fort Tryon Park. Listen Closely’s diverse programming has included standard chamber music repertoire, early music, improvisation, and commissions of new works by local composers.
Listen Closely was initially based in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, but we are now expanding to work with other communities, including Madison, Wisconsin.
As we grow, we continue to search for new venues, new partners, and new ways to reach the people in the communities in which we work.
