Since the late nineteenth century Cuban music, poetry and theater have been a vital piece of the fabric of African diasporic and Latinx arts histories in the US. Lukumi Arts will offer performances, cultural activities and educational initiatives that celebrate Afro-Cuban arts. The performances strive to represent our art form at a high level, which will in turn show the public the power of African diasporic arts. The concerts and community events provide underground artists the opportunity to share their talent with diverse publics.The goal of this creative endeavor is to challenge gender and racial bias in Latino music and media, as well as to address economic disparity among artists in our communities. This project educates the public about the vital role of Afro-Latino arts within American cultural life.
