About

With music by Kennedy Verrett and libretto by George M. Kopp, "Madame Theremin" tells the true story of Lavinia Williams, who as a young African-American ballerina married Leon Theremin, the Russian inventor of the electronic instrument that bears his name. In the 1930s, when the story takes place, interracial marriage was scandalous. But scandal did not deter Lavinia in following her artistic and spiritual goals, which ultimately led to her founding a school of dance in Haiti. Politics, art, and Haitian vodou combine to present an exciting, and ultimately joyful, theatrical experience.
