About

Initiated and co-presented by Insula 42 (formerly Film ETC), in partnership with leading American film organizations (from the Film Society of Lincoln Center to BAM, the Jacob Burns Film Center and Film Forum), MAKING WAVES: New Romanian Cinema is the leading comprehensive U.S. festival dedicated to showcasing what's best in contemporary Romanian filmmaking, as well as the films and filmmakers who laid the ground for the new Romanian cinema.

In 2023, the festival returned in full to in-person screenings in a network of New York City cinemas, presenting in March-April a selection of recent Romanian productions at Metrograph, Roxy Cinema New York, and DCTV's Firehouse Cinema, along with the first release of a restored Romanian classic in the US, Lucian Pintilie’s iconic THE OAK, at Film Forum.

Making Waves will return with its 18th edition in spring 2024 in a network of New York City cinemas, presenting a showcase of the best in recent Romanian cinemas, as well as a series of special programs. More details will follow soon.

Please consider donating for the 18th edition of Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema! Your support will cover travel and accommodation expenses for guests traveling to the U.S., management, screening fees and all marketing expenses to make Romanian cinema visible in the U.S.

Since 2012, Making Waves has been a fully independent festival of Romanian contemporary cinema and culture, made possible through the support of numerous institutional funders as well as individual donors. More than 600 individuals have provided generous and enthusiastic support to the festival: fans of Romanian cinema, artists, audience members, and we are proud to be the first large Romanian event to have been produced through crowdfunding.
