Maya Ciarrocchi is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in installation, video, photography and performance. In these works, Ciarrocchi uses storytelling and personal narrative as a method to generate empathy and as a device to agitate conversation around bodies of difference. Past work centers on the unseen and underrepresented including communities living in the coal fields of Appalachia, formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews, and Trans* and gender non-conforming people. More recently, she is using architectural drawings and maps to trace the lost and forgotten spaces left by the dead in order to question and reveal how/why people, cultures, and identities disappear especially amongst marginalized communities. Ciarrocchi’s previous career as a dance artist is evidenced in her work both formally and compositionally, and in her emphasis on physicality as a form of expression that can convey meaning outside of language.
