a musical memoir celebrating our life, love, and creative collaboration
About
We’re Michael Biello & Dan Martin and we’re creating a musical memoir celebrating our 40+ years together as life partners, creative collaborators, and LGBTQ cultural activists.
Our Amazing Queer Songbook will be organized around original songs and performance pieces we’ve created from when we met in 1975 to the present, reflecting our history and the times we’ve lived through: growing up, coming out to our families, exploring intimacy and sexuality, building our relationship, dealing with loss, becoming activists, celebrating our pride. And honoring some of the amazing people we’ve met along the way, from pleasure activist Annie Sprinkle to marriage activist Edie Windsor.
2020 has been a very challenging year - but it has given us the time and incentive to comb through our archives and experiment with ways to tell our story. It's become clear to us that the most effective and compelling way to share our memoir will be as a full length musical documentary - weaving together archival films of our performances, newly filmed interviews, and incorporating the lovely footage we shot in 2018 at The York Theatre featuring some of our favorite Broadway and Off-Broadway performers.
Michael & Dan's Amazing Queer Songbook is a legacy project for us, an act of creation and love. A way for our songs and our history to be shared, known, and live on past us. Not that we’re planning on checking out anytime soon - but we’re both in our late-sixties and feeling like this is the right time for us to tell our uniquely personal story of love and collaboration.
