About

Microscope Gallery was founded by artists/curators Elle Burchill and Andrea Monti in 2010 to expand the visibility and recognition of artists working primarily with moving image, sound, performance, digital and other time-based arts — from emerging to pioneering artists of their art forms — through both exhibitions and a weekly Event Series. It was conceived as an inclusive space addressing what was seen as an unnecessary divide between time-based works exhibited in the white box setting of the gallery and those shown in the black box of the theater and performance venue. To date, Microscope has presented over 100 exhibitions and 600 screenings, performances, sound nights, readings and more at the gallery as well as off-site in New York and abroad.

In the 2023-2024 season we will continue the online streaming of many events, allowing Members and those outside of NYC to watch and participate in Q&As that follow. The emphasis of the Event Series continues to be on the presentation and discussion of works by emerging artists through our series YES, Open Calls and Open Screen Nights; performance and other more ephemeral art forms, including expanded cinema and live sound; current and risk-taking pieces by more established artists; and forgotten or rarely seen historical works.

Exciting upcoming shows include: live sound w/ Foster, Hsu, Kamerman, Meehan, & Peñalosa, 9/19; experimental Barbie films, 10/2; the debut of collective 16mm film Le Ratoir spearheaded by Katherine Bauer and Joyce Lainé, 10/8. Other events include Lauren Kelley, Tomonari Nishikawa, Sasha Waters Freyer, and Nina Sobell, more from our emerging artist series YES! and those culled from our recent Open Call.

Microscope has also collaborated with institutions including on "Dreamlands: Expanded” a series of 10 expanded cinema events in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art and “Process: To Each Their Own Image,” a screening at Centre Pompidou, Paris, among others.

The Event Series has received support from Film Exhibition Fund (2022); Brooklyn Arts Council (2016 & 2018-20); NYSCA’s Electronic Media & Film Presentation Funds (2016 & 2017); and the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation (2014-17).
