Modoo Theatre Company seeks support to develop and present theatrical work that explores the lives, relationships, and experiences of the people shaping contemporary America. Inspired by the Korean tradition of Jogakbo, our work brings distinct individual stories together while honoring the unique qualities of each person's experience.
Our initial development plans include an étude-based experimental performance in November 2026, a Creative Development Performance in May 2027, and our Inaugural Production in October 2027. These stages will support actor training, artistic experimentation, the development of performance material, and the establishment of our company's artistic identity.
During our first several years, we expect to concentrate on developing original theatrical material through étude-based exploration. As the company grows, we may also consider existing plays that align with our artistic vision. Our étude-based approach will continue to inform actor training, character development, and rehearsal, regardless of whether a production is newly created or drawn from an existing play.
Beginning in 2028, we aim to pursue opportunities at the San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF), other Bay Area arts festivals, and a range of theater programs and initiatives. We hope to build lasting connections within the regional performing arts community and bring our work to increasingly diverse audiences.
Support will help us develop performances, provide resources for rehearsals and production, strengthen our artistic and administrative capacity, and share Korean-language theater with audiences across cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Through this work, we hope to contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected American theater landscape.
