Music, Sound, and Visual Art by Kathryn Lewis

Hello!

My ongoing practice in music, sound, and art seeks to generate experiences of freedom through expressions motivated by curiosity, observation, experimentation, chance, transformation, connection, and feelings. Among other things, I write simple songs about complex relationships. Over the years, I’ve had many opportunities to reflect on such matters, and now I have a bunch of songs that are itchin’ to get out into the world and live their best lives - with you, and hopefully with some people we don't even know yet! So I'm gathering funds to record these songs with a band of local musicians. 

Classic Country Music is great for its direct, truth-telling power that also leaves room for nuance, innuendo, and humor. Most of my songs are Country at the core, with elements of Pop/Rock, Jazz, and Reggae sprinkled into the mix. The songs are relatable, accessible, and sure to get stuck in your head in all the right ways.

From 2017 to 2021 I was the recording and mixing engineer at Sheriff Bob’s studio in SoHo, where I co-produced 4 albums, an award-winning short film, the Thompson Street Medicine Show, music for a touring theatrical production of Charlotte’s Web, and several videos, recording sessions, and live shows. I love the process! 

I know very very few women who do the work I do. Between 2012 and 2018, only 2.1% of Billboard Hot 100 producers were women. The research that produced that report (led by Stacy Smith at USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative) suggests recording artists have some power to give gender equality a boost in music production. I’m committed to hiring a diverse team of collaborators and co-producers in order to create more opportunities for underrepresented people in music production, and to create work that reflects the people of its own time and place. 

This collection of songs forms a semi-narrative portrait of an American Woman. She is funny, flawed, and strong, and I hope to introduce you to her and some of her feelings about "Wasted Love" with this album! (Spoiler alert: Love is never wasted (even if you are).)
