About

New York After Dark is a feature-length, social documentary which provides an observational and immersive look at life with blindness in New York City. While exploring the themes of accessibility, transportation, adaptive technology, employment and community, filmmaker Ilana Fayerman also lives blindfolded for a week in order to better understand the blind experience.

Two percent of NYC residents live every day in the dark. That's 165,000 visually impaired urbanites. How do they navigate in a city that doesn’t remotely cater to blind needs? Out of 12,460 intersections in NYC, a staggering 99 have audibly cued crosswalks. And, only 30% of blind New Yorkers are in the workforce.

A sensory film for sighted and blind audiences, New York After Dark will challenge viewers to have a profound experience that blurs the line between worlds with and without vision. This is a crucial step in opening doors to a marginalized community, bringing them out of the dark, and giving us permission to see one another – likely, for many, for the very first time.
