Tenor Nicholas Phan is seeking funding for his ongoing solo recording projects.
Over the course of its history, this fund has helped underwrite the production of four albums (two of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards), in addition to a number of music video projects. To date, the fund has supported the work of roughly 30 musicians, in addition to multiple audio engineers, recording producers, videographers, and video editors .
Current recording projects in development include an album of vocal works for tenor by composer Nico Muhly, as well as a video project to film the entirety of Hugo Wolf's Spanisches Liederbuch with mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, in addition to other projects ranging from Monteverdi duets to vocal chamber works by Vaughan Williams. Other ongoing projects include a continuation of the Britten/Pears project already begun with the albums Winter Words, Still Falls the Rain, and Illuminations with an aim to record the entire song repertoire that Benjamin Britten composed for his life-partner, the tenor Peter Pears; as well as more short video projects involving performances of art song in unusual settings with the goal of broadening the audience for the vocal recital repertoire.
Other planned future projects are an album of Baroque scared arias, an album of vocal works by contemporary composers, as well as an album of vocal/orchestral works by Mozart, Stravinsky, and Britten.
Praised by the Boston Globe as "one of the world's most remarkable singers", Nicholas Phan continues to distinguish himself as one of the most compelling young tenors appearing on the prestigious concert and opera stages of the world today.
Mr. Phan’s most recent album as part of this sponsorship, Clairières, which features the songs of Nadia and Lili Boulanger, was nominated for the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. His recent album of German Lieder, Gods & Monsters, was nominated in 2017 for the same award. His other previous solo albums, Illuminations, A Painted Tale (the first produced as part of this Fractured Atlas project), Still Falls the Rain and Winter Words have all made many annual 'Best of' lists, including those of The New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Out New York, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, WQXR and the Toronto Star.
