FILM SYNOPSIS
Like all Israeli youth, Atalya is obligated to become a soldier. Unlike most, she questions the practices of her country’s military, and becomes determined to challenge this rite of passage. Despite her family’s wishes, she refuses military duty and is imprisoned for her dissent. Her courage moves her family to reconsider their own moral positions and personal power. Objector follows Atalya to prison and beyond, offering a unique window into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of a young woman who seeks truth and takes a stand for justice.
IMPACT PROJECT
In a culminating scene of the film, Palestinian activist Bassem Tamimi tells Atalya, “We want to build a brave generation,” and encourages her to continue building solidarity between Israeli and Palestinian youth. The Objector Impact Project will engage and educate people to be able to take a meaningful stand in support of this brave generation.
With free community screenings and a speaking tour, we will stimulate the education and awareness necessary for bold action. We will connect audiences to grassroots organizations and catalyze new political and cultural collaborations. Mesarvot (our Israeli partner) focuses on organizing conscientious objectors and encouraging the international community to apply external pressure to end the occupation. Meanwhile, domestic partners, like Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), focus on ending US support for the occupation and Israeli militarization. Our impact strategy will adopt these same goals, while also seeking to grow the connections between the different organizations through shared screening events and discussions.
