About

otherland is a chamber-protest album and multidisciplinary ritual that weaves music, movement, storytelling, and film to explore grief as a catalyst for radical empathy, intersectional solidarity, and repairing our relationship to the earth. This song cycle of protest anthems for historically unsung and underrepresented communities meditates on the element of earth and its abundance beyond oppressive systems. It creates a sonic tapestry blending Americana folk, movement music, and spiritual jazz through guitar, piano, voice, foot percussion, synths, found sounds, and diverse chamber and sacred instrumentation. The music builds upon foundations laid by visionary artists and cultural workers like Nina Simone, Nobuko Miyamoto, Mavis Staples, and Alice Coltrane whose work conjures the spirit of freedom. Written through the lens of a genderqueer, transnational adoptee, it is built together with a collaborative team of QTBIPOC folx from the global majority.
