Founded and co-directed by harpsichordist/pianist Yunyi Ji and historical cellist Hasan Abualhaj along with resident new music nonet Stolen Time, Parallax is a rising Bay Area-based concert series that unites historically-informed performances of pre-1800 music with contemporary compositions and modern-day premieres. In its endeavor, Parallax seeks to capture new perspectives of music and society through programs of works composed centuries apart. Music allows the sounds of history to reach the ears of the present — and, vice versa, allows living artists to channel new creativity from the past. Faithful to local art and living traditions, our performances are set in unique and intimate artists’ spaces where collaboration and community continue to thrive.
Parallax is missioned towards creating musical experiences that inspire reflection upon the connection between artists, audiences, spaces, and subjects. As such, the theme of each concert is tailored to befit the specific contexts of its performance. We proudly celebrate the incredible musicians and artists we work with, the unique environments that host us, the breadth of histories inherent in our crafts, and the multiplicity of experiences we share as individuals. When all considered, no concert could possibly be repetitive or routine.
Parallax is committed to the creation of new art and compositions and serve to justly represent the diversity of creative voices both in history and in the present. We answer to issues of inclusivity and access within the performing arts and dare to challenge industry conventions that have historically underserved living composers and artists of marginalized backgrounds. We pledge that all concert admission will operate on sliding-scale/NOTAFLOF to ensure equitable access.
Parallax is currently in its launch stages with a chamber concert and a full ensemble concert planned for Summer 2024. Your contribution will help us realize these first concerts and help us embark on a full-scale season in 2025. The funds we receive will go directly towards securing concert operations, venue rental and equipment costs, digital archiving and photography, equitable pay for our artists, and more.
