About

Phoenix Rising Arts Initiative, under KDS Foster Closet, is a community-based program dedicated to healing, empowerment, and youth development through art, storytelling, and hands-on skill building.

Our mission is to create safe and transformative spaces where young people—especially those
impacted by foster care, trauma, and life challenges—can express themselves, build confidence, and develop real-world skills that lead to purpose and stability.

This initiative is led by Latasha Mauldin, a peer support professional and behavioral health professional pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work in Behavioral Health and continuing her training in substance use counseling. Her work is rooted in lived experience, community service, and a commitment to helping others heal and grow.

Latasha is supported by a growing network of community partners, mentors, and volunteers who contribute to the development of youth programs, event coordination, and outreach efforts. Together, the team is working to build a sustainable program that combines creativity, mentorship, and workforce development.

Through our programs, including Phoenix Rising and Hammer to Hope, we engage youth in creative and practical activities such as public art projects, community events, and workforce-based experiences. These initiatives are designed to support emotional healing while also teaching responsibility, teamwork, and leadership.

Our current focus is the development of a youth-created memorial bench, which serves as both a public art installation and a symbol of resilience, remembrance, and community healing. This project allows participants to be directly involved in designing and building something meaningful, giving them a sense of ownership and pride while contributing positively to their community.
In addition to creative expression, our work extends into community outreach efforts such as clothing drives, food distribution events, and youth engagement opportunities that connect individuals to support, resources, and pathways for growth.
We are building more than programs—we are building a foundation for youth to rise above adversity, discover their voice, and transform their experiences into strength and purposes.
