PLaCE (Peoples, Land, agricultures, Cultures, and Ecology) is a place-specific platform for workshops and family-friendly artist residencies based in Copake, NY. As opposed to the “universal,” disembodied knowledge celebrated in the dominant "Western" culture, PLaCE invites artists to focus on the local and the particular through communal, highly-embodied experiences with nature. Just as the interactions between particular land and lifeforms give rise to ecologies, the interactions between the land, ecology, and its peoples give rise to place-centered crafts and cultures. PLaCE aims to give participants a glimpse of what it might mean to be infused and embodied with place by maximizing communal contact with our greater-than-human kin, challenging participants to rediscover our shared relationships with and responsibilities to the wild – as well as each other.
