Playful Substance

Playful Substance develops new plays and supports theatrical artists through our Writers' Groups, workshops, readings, productions and community events. Our annual Pithy Party highlights the works in progress from our Writers' Groups along with 2-3 full productions each season that are generated from inside our ever expanding network of artists. 

Our community is inclusive and dedicated to minimizing the barriers to a creative life. Class, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, financial situation or status as a caregiver should not keep anyone from being part of a creative community, either as an artist or as an arts consumer. 

In addition to our commitment to equitable representation and access, Playful Substance strives to support work/life balance for our affiliated artists. We believe that in providing opportunities for member artists to explore, create and collaborate, we should also honor and support an artist’s needs for proper self care, family commitments, and financial health to the best of our ability as a community. We seek to build a culture that values the whole artist, is understanding of their unique challenges and makes the investment in the artist equal to the artist’s investment in the work of Playful Substance.

Our promise to our audience is fun. Even when the subject matter is complex or dark, we should be continually reminded that our emotional landscape is nothing to fear, that emotions are survivable, even useful, and that sharing an experience in a room with friends and strangers is a powerful way to remember how much we have in common.
