I’m fascinated by the American idea of work. My plays often take place on the job, or between co-workers. As an artist I ground my work in reality, but always leave room for accident, surprise, and the one-off or offbeat obsession--a snippet of overheard conversation, running into a long-lost friend, or being struck by beauty on my daily walks around the city. These details build and move the action of my plays: a bolt of information, an image, a sudden illumination can move the audience forward or backward in time, light up a connection, or drop us into a particular truth with theatricality, precision, and fun.
