2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the WPA Poster Division of the Federal Art Project — one of the most remarkable efforts in our country’s history that gave artists jobs that worked for the public good. These posters weren’t just eye-catching, they were public service tools that promoted everything from public health and safety to education, national parks, the arts — and even hope — during some of the hardest times in the U.S.
Between 1935 and 1943, WPA artists created more than 35,000 poster designs. But fewer than 1,000 were officially documented nationwide.
Posters for the People: Art of the WPA is rebuilding this lost legacy. Through research, outreach, and photography, we’ve identified 2,292 lost WPA posters—and counting. Our digital archive brings these powerful works back into public view—many for the first time in nearly 90 years.
Funds raised for this project will support travel, documentation fees, educational programs, and the upkeep of our traveling exhibit.
