NYC Bhangra is New York City’s own Bhangra enthusiasts who are spreading awareness and joy through Bhangra dance instruction and performances. Bhangra is a traditional Punjabi folk-dancing style developed in the northern part of the region originally to celebrate the harvest. It has been developed in modern times to absorb and embrace western dance and contemporary influences. NYC Bhangra was established in 2007 to promote Indian dance forms in New York City. Today, it is one of the best-known dance organizations in New York, with a diverse membership drawing from all ages, ethnicities and professions. Our aim is to promote a wider knowledge of Indian culture through performance and education and we do this through a combination of the more traditional classroom-based instruction and community involvement where we train both adults and children in the Bhangra style of dance.
NYC Bhangra has organized and presented folk dances of India at public and private events in and around New York, including performances for schools, government, corporations, outdoor/indoor festivals and private events. Our dance school currently provides quarterly sessions to private schools around the city i.e. British International School. We also stage street events where we showcase the performance of Bhangra and promote it as a cultural and social facility. We provide several weekly classes in Manhattan for students of all levels and we are now expanding our influence and program to other areas including Jersey City, Edison, Richmond Hill and Brooklyn.
Over 25,000+ working professionals in NYC Metro area and 1500+ students have attended our events, classes and performances in the tri-state area. We have performed for over 350 showcases with over 100 organizations featuring 155 dance professionals in our dance routines and choreographies. Some of the notable organizations we consistently work with include Incredible India, United Nations, Annual New York Times Travel Show, and the Indian Consulate of New York. We have taken Bhangra to school & university classrooms, street festivals, Travel Shows, Parades and, we continue to do more.
