Theater is often spoken of in terms of its universality, celebrated for its ability to illuminate our common humanity, reflect our collective depth and complexity, and elevate our lived experience to a height worthy of artistry. But more often than not, even as questions of equal representation and diversity of voices are prominent to an unprecedented degree, theater’s lauded universality remains one in which whiteness is centered, maleness is dominant, and heteronormativity is the rule.
Quick Silver Theater Company (QSTC) was established to shift this dynamic, localizing our storytelling with specificity to culture/race, class, gender, and sexuality that allows for a different uncovering of truth, broadening the scope of our understanding, empathy, and engagement both as theater creators as well as theater consumers.
Founded in 2013, QSTC is a collective of thirteen artists dedicated to amplifying the collective voice, individual potential, and visible presence of people of color, women, and other marginalized groups within the American theatrical landscape. We execute our mission through a three-fold initiative:
1. Develop and commission new work by emerging writers of color,
2. Create space for actors of color and other marginalized communities to explore and reimagine classical and contemporary texts in mounted productions, and
3. Facilitate the hands-on, professional training and mentorship of designers, stage managers, and backstage crews of color.
PROGRAMMING
QSTC’s core programming consists of educational outreach, the staging of an extant classic and/or contemporary play, devised works collaboratively composed by the membership, and our annual Playwrights of Color Summit (POCS) in Geneva, New York.
