WHAT:
JUDY DOOMED US ALL
(Nancy Reagan, Tornados, Class Warfare)
A gritty, political Americana musical, wrapped in a tumbleweed, served on a tablecloth from Party City
JUDY DOOMED US ALL follows our tween protagonists Judy and Blinker in a small town in Kansas, Nancy Reagan’s most recent stop on her Grand National Tour, as they struggle to understand what growing up means when your resources are limited. Will they be like Nancy Reagan or will they grow up to be like the town outcasts?
This original piece has been in development with Rat Queen for almost two years. A year ago we held a concert night featuring original lyrics from the piece, composed/created/performed by 20+ friends. Since then, we have workshopped fragments of the piece at various venues across NYC. We commenced our formal devising process with this insanely ferocious cast in January. We are now ready to share our first full iteration of the script.
We will be presenting a workshop/staged reading at Starr Bar, (214 Starr St. Brooklyn, NY 11237) on March 30th at 7:30pm. This is "Part One" of what will become a fully formed musical monster. We will be encouraging audience members to give feedback and ask questions, all of which will help us continue to develop the script.
We have spent so much emotional energy on this piece and are ready to show it to the world and hear what you think. If we had a nickel for every tear shed, we'd produce it ourselves. But life is not The Giving Tree and that's why we need you.
YES, WE'RE ASKING FOR MONEY. HERE'S WHY:
As you probably know, the great thing about being in your 20s is that you have lots of ideas and no money:
1. We want to pay our people(approx half of all donations go directly into the pockets of artists involved).
2.In the current socio-political climate, we feel it is imperative to revisit legends of our American History.
3. Space in New York is outrageously expensive(particularly when attempting to fit 10+ actors devising)
4. 80s nostalgia is very in right now and we're reinventing it.
5. We believe in karma.Think of this campaign like one of those early 2000s chain emails that spookily threatened retribution if you did not forward it along to 20 friends.
WHERE DO YOUR FUNDS COME IN:
48.75% is to pay artists involved (actors, musicians, designers)
12% for design budget
20% rehearsal costs
5% for insurances/fees
15% is going to future iterations of JUDY/future RQTC projects *
*3,500 is a lot for one performance, we know. Our fundraising goal factors in a percentage that will help Rat Queen survive after producing this version of our project. (Also, we get taxed!)
