About

Remaining Native is a story about Indigenous resilience, reclamation, and pride as 17-year-old cross country runner, Ku Stevens, runs the 50-mile escape route his great grandfather took as he fled from Indian Boarding School at only 8 years old. Ku’s run comes in the wake of the first federal investigation into Indian Boarding Schools. The United States is built on stolen land and the destruction of Indigenous peoples and culture. The legacy of that crime cannot be undone, forgiven, or forgotten. Every day Indigenous people fight to Remain Native. This film tells the story of a young man, who is using his talent, strength, and determination to run towards his future, honoring the legacy of his great-grandfather and thousands of others who escaped, and those who never made it free, from Native American Boarding schools. This is a story of power, systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, environmental injustice, and how the 2021 Federal Investigation into Native American Boarding Schools unfolds.
