About

ROOMIES is a darkly comedic and heartfelt solo play written and performed by Julia Stephens about friendship, identity, and the strange ways connection finds us when life falls apart. Sophie was once an LA it-girl. Now, on the eve of her 30th birthday, she’s celebrating with the last VIP she ever wanted on the guest list—her 18-year-old schizophrenic roommate in a treatment facility. ROOMIES invites audiences into one very unexpected birthday party where glamour, madness, and survival all crash the same table. Following a sold-out New York City workshop directed by Portia Krieger (Associate Director on Broadway’s Fun Home—Tony Award Winner for Best Musical—and Almost Famous), the project will continue development with a public workshop presentation in Los Angeles in April 2026, supported by the City of West Hollywood. Funds raised through this campaign will support the show’s next major milestone: a one-month run at Scotland’s world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2026. The Fringe—recognized as the largest performing arts festival in the world—has launched groundbreaking works such as Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, which began as solo shows before becoming international hits. ROOMIES is both personal and universal, exploring how mental health struggles and unexpected relationships can lead to transformation. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles—where Hollywood glamour meets the stark reality of a treatment facility—the play is funny, raw, and deeply human. At its heart, ROOMIES reminds audiences that connection can come from the most unlikely places, and that even in our darkest moments, there’s room for humor, hope, and grace.
