Launched in 2018,
Roots and Action creates drama-in-education programs for high school and college students. Its programs are based on a replicable model for using drama in the classroom to build critical-thinking, academic and leadership skills. Its techniques promote active learning, self-discovery and a social awareness to help students improve communication and problem-solving skills, think creatively, work collaboratively and develop a range of competencies to successfully navigate the challenges of life.
The mission of
Roots and Action is to motivate, inspire and prepare young people for active engagement in their communities. We believe strong, resilient communities are at the heart of any healthy society. To become effective leaders, young people need the skills and the will to connect with their communities, share their stories and work together to solve shared problems.
Roots and Action helps students develop a sense of community and learn how to apply their skills to new situations as they forge new paths and create the world of
tomorrow.
Roots and Action: Building Community is our first program for high school students in Puerto Rico. Each semester we serve approximately 150 students at three high schools in urban and rural areas of the island. The goal of
Building Community is to empower students to take action by helping them discover their ability to create change in their communities. The program uses drama as a teaching tool to help students explore their identity as Puerto Ricans, build the skills to succeed academically, and recognize their roles as members of society.
Help us give young people the tools to build a strong, healthy future for themselves and for Puerto Rico. Donate today!
