About

Runaway Princess
(A hopeful tale of heroin, hooking, and happiness)

Written and Performed by Mary Goggin
Directed by Dan Ruth
WHAT
“Once upon a time, there was a Princess born to a King and Queen who were banished from their island, forced to flee to America in a coffin ship.” Thus, begins the tale of the Runaway Princess, in which Mary Goggin shares a true story, laced with wicked humor and much pathos, of her Irish Catholic upbringing, drug addiction and prostitution, and the multitude of characters she encountered along the way to ultimately finding joy.
IMPACT
Ms. Goggin,
I spoke with you after a performance of Runaway Princess in Galway. I was with my daughter. Your play blew us away so much that I considered going to Baltimore in October to see it again. I was the 63 year old bald guy, with my 27 YO daughter, and after you revealed--as I thought--that it was non-fiction, I mentioned that I had been an undercover NY State Trooper, and you smiled and said "you busted me."
You also said that you hoped this play would be an inspiration to people struggling with substance abuse and I told you I drink too much--so I stopped cold turkey on July 28, 2019.  You made a difference in my life for the better,  A Tale of Hope.

As a CSEC (commercial sexual exploitation of a child) survivor -Mary’s performance was like watching my life played out on a stage. That evening my Sister (also a CSEC survivor), and I watched in amazement. It was so powerful that I saw her show twice -bringing different guest each time to see this timeless tale of heroin, hookers and happiness. Each show I could not help getting emotional over her vividly performed over sexualization of girls that lead so many into a life of modern day slavery,  commonly described as “prostitution.”
