Sanctuary is an interdisciplinary project that contrasts individual compliance and the maximization of self-interest with collective action. It will culminate in an evening-length performance designed to raise awareness of our complicity in—and our potential agency to resist and create alternatives to—the dehumanization, criminalization, and exclusion of particular groups. The residency project integrates three artistic innovations: 1) an interdisciplinary, collaborative development process; 2) a fusion of two distinct artistic traditions; and 3) a flexible structure that hinges on audience participation. Interactive digital technology enables all of these innovations, subverting technology’s dominant extractive, punitive, and isolating effects. Simulating real-world decision-making by third parties about who deserves safety and protection and who does not, the performance asks: How do we decide, individually and institutionally? How do our everyday choices affect—even if unwittingly—others’ path to sanctuary?
