Beginning in 1965, Bombeck’s syndicated newspaper column appeared in 900 newspapers nationwide. Her funny, honest observations about domestic life made millions laugh, while challenging the expectations placed on women. She gave people permission to laugh at their imperfect lives and see those lives as worthy of being told.

Her influence continues through the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, a sold-out gathering that brings writers together from far and wide. For many participants, it is more than a writing conference: it is a place to find encouragement, community, mentorship, and the courage to discover and wield their voice.

This film goes beyond Bombeck’s biography to explore why humor matters—especially when life gets hard. We meet people who have used humor to navigate cancer, racism, the pandemic, 9/11, and personal crises. We explore the psychological and physiological benefits of laughter and storytelling and how humor can help create deeper human connections. Featuring archival material, Bombeck family reflections, workshop participants, celebrity humorists, animation, and insights from those who brought Bombeck to life on stage, the film ultimately reveals her greatest legacy: the ripple effect of one woman finding her voice and inspiring others to find and wield theirs.

She is an award-winning media producer, known for her work producing and hosting such cable shows as Family by Choice about adoption and foster care, and Conversations with Creatives in which she interviewed artists and explored their work. Recently, she produced the podcast series, The Pink Change Purse about "Opportunities, Possibilities, and Empowerment for Women."
