"When Can I See You?" Begins (!)Dear Friends, First of all: if you contributed to this campaign for an incentive—whether a postcard, a live album, or a live show in your home—please know that we have not forgotten you, and will reach out when we need your information. We're just a wee bit busy at the moment, as the Shearwater + Loma “When Can I See You?” tour you made possible is now under way. We’ve just spent five days rehearsing Loma songs in a converted barracks in Cornwall, and the cool, damp air is wonderful after the endless sauna of outer Austin, where spent the last two weeks getting the Shearwater set together. We ran through it again today, at full volume. (Both bands will be playing a warm-up show nearby at Patchwork Studios next week—our first show in the UK since 2016, and Loma’s first since 2018.) It’s thrilling to play music with other people again. Especially when they’re as talented as this crew: besides me, the touring lineup for both Shearwater and Loma is Dan Duszynski (guitar/samples/backing vocals), Emily Lee (keyboards/backing vocals), Sam Pankey (bass), Josh Halpern (drums), and Emily Cross (Loma vocals/clarinet). To have them all in one room is extraordinary, and the hours are flying by. I think these co-headlining sets will probably be the best shows either band has ever played. Even against the backdrop of a rickety world. We’re looking at images of France tonight and hoping our Paris show will still go forward, for example (it most likely will), and worrying over the confusingly vague details of crossing international borders without our equipment and merch being seized or heavily taxed. Mostly, though, I feel incredibly lucky to spend time with these wonderful people, doing this quixotic thing. And I want to gently urge our friends over here: if you’ve ever wanted to see Loma or Shearwater perform live, this may be your best chance. Several of the shows are sold out (London, Manchester, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen at last count)—but many still have tickets available. FYI, Here’s where ticket sales stand today: 27 Oct - Millbrook UK - Patchwork Studios - Warm-up show (tix still available) 31 Oct - Maastricht NL - Muziekgieterij - cap. 420, presales 164 1 Nov - Amsterdam NL - Bitterzoet - SOLD OUT 2 Nov - Hamburg DE - Betty - cap. 270, presales 139 3 Nov - Odense DK - Posten - cap. 350, presales 19 4 Nov - Copenhagen DK - Beta - SOLD OUT 5 Nov - Berlin DE - Privatclub - cap. 240, presales 217 8 Nov - Kortrijk BE - Sonic City Festival 9 Nov - Paris FR - Petit Bain - cap. 400, presales 245 10 Nov - Breda NL - Metz - cap. 350, presales 219 11 Nov - Groningen NL - Vera - cap. 450, presales 160 12 Nov - Turnhout BE - Warande - cap. 550, presales 97 14 Nov - Munich DE - Ampere - cap. 450, presales 177 15 Nov - Geneva CH - L’Usine - cap. 750, presales 43 16 Nov - Zurich CH - Bogen F - cap. 300, presales 163 19 Nov - London UK - The Garage - SOLD OUT 20 Nov - Manchester UK - The Deaf Institute - SOLD OUT 21 Nov - Glasgow UK - Cathouse - cap. 320, presales 138 22 Nov - Bristol UK - Strange Brew - cap. 330, presales 169 You gave generously to help this tour happen, and we hope you can see it if you’re able. But also: if you or someone you know wants to come to one of these shows but can’t afford it, let us know at contact@shearwatermusic.com. We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to get you in—but we have more flexibility at some shows than others, and we’ll do what we can. We hope to see you in the coming weeks. It’s a joy to be playing live again. All the very best to you and yours - JM / SW

A new song for youDear Friends, As I write this, we're packing up to start rehearsals and narrowing down our set lists.. I can hardly believe Shearwater is finally about to go on tour again for the first time in a decade. We're all a bit giddy about it. (You can find all the dates, and ticket links, at www.shearwatermusic.com.) Also: on Friday, we're releasing "Light Governance," a song from New World Vultures, on Bandcamp. We're doing this in part to remind critics that The New World came out this year, and in part to tease New World Vultures' release next year (we don't know when, yet). But as backers of our tour (and, most likely, of The New World and New World Vultures), we wanted to share "Light Governance" with you for free. . It's not entirely typical of New World Vultures, but it gives you a taste of the album's identity: it's a bit looser and lighter than The New World. Much of it was recorded very late at night, when songs sometimes blew in on the wind. We hope you enjoy it. And thank you, as always, for making our dreams come true. JM / Shearwater

YOU DID ITDear Friends, WE DID IT. The Shearwater / Loma When can I see you? tour is officially happening. And, really, YOU did it. After a nervous moment in the first week, you came through and lifted us to our goal, and then beyond our goal, and the feeling of relief and excitement among teams SW and Loma can hardly be conveyed. (“Gob-smacked” doesn’t begin to cover it). You made it possible for us to be performing bands again, and saved us from a bitter defeat. We are profoundly grateful. Every donation was significant and appreciated, no matter the amount, and some of you donated multiple times. We especially thank the supporters who coordinated independently to fund group donations (!), which accounted for over a third of the total. This was nothing short of overwhelming, and some stunned tears of gratitude were shed over here. In the end, almost 400 people donated to support this tour, even though some of you will not be able to see the shows in person. And, speaking for myself, I was surprised by a feeling I hadn’t expected: suddenly, I feel like a real musician again. After a lot of (mildly profane) exclamations of delight and disbelief when the campaign closed on Thursday night, I spent last Friday in a blissful daze—savoring the fact that the plans we’d been hoping to put in motion for months can lurch into gear right away, and telling the musicians, via text, that the dates they’d been waiting patiently for me to confirm were really happening. [Cue a frenzy of plane-ticket purchases, gear rentals, hotel reservations, merch orders, hiring a sound technician, etc.]. The trust you’ve placed in all of us is a gift I and my bandmates will never be able to fully repay. But we’ll do our very best to live up to it, and we’ll give you everything we have on the road and in the studio. Thank you for making us part of your life. You’re certainly a part of ours. All the very best to you, and deepest thanks - JM / Shearwater / Loma
P.S. WNYC's Soundcheck podcast has just posted our live session with Laurie Anderson, recorded two weeks ago. You can listen here. P.P.S. I’ve also spent hours just playing guitar and singing practicing for my solo show at Rough Trade NYC on Thursday—my first live performance of Shearwater songs in the US in ten years. It feels wonderful to write that. (JM) |
