Sonare Music Academy, founded by pianist and educator Dr. Hwa-Jin Kim, is a mission-driven music education program based in Asheville, NC. With over 22 years of teaching experience and a deep commitment to artistic mentorship, Dr. Kim created Sonare to nurture the next generation of musicians through thoughtful instruction, performance, and community engagement.
Sonare offers workshops, chamber ensemble coaching, student recitals, and masterclasses with exceptional guest artists. All programs are designed to serve students of all ages and levels—especially those who lack access to quality music education due to financial barriers. Through generous donor support, we provide scholarships to students who otherwise could not afford lessons.
Our concerts, masterclasses, and events are open to the public and hosted both in person and virtually, expanding access to audiences near and far. In addition to performance opportunities, Sonare promotes reflective and joyful learning through storytelling, drawing from Dr. Kim’s humorous and heartfelt book You Are Slightly Very Late, based on real moments from her college teaching.
