Staged Reading of "The Shiva of Ethel Zimmerman"

Vera did not want the Jewish mourning tradition of shiva for her mother, Ethel, but Vera’s daughter, Audrey, insisted. Neither of them anticipates the effects of oversexed Aunt Laila, trying to recapture her youth, the confessional from the boy next door or the mysterious stranger, bringing secrets from long ago. Grab a rugelach and a pull up a chair to create community for the shiva of Ethel Zimmerman!

This script was born out of the playwright's own unprocessed grief from the
passing of a loved one. However, as other artists have interacted with it, it
has become clear that it taps into a deeper well that others connect to
also. Grief and loss connects all humans, across religions, party lines,
family separations. This play examines how each generation deals with the
subject of grief, even if it doesn't relate to death and how that has become
intertwined with how we approach our future. This script has the capability
to lighten that load with a little humor, a little perspective and a sense of
community.
