About

SUNDAY ROCKET — Independent Documentary Initiative is a Washington, DC-based project led by producer Derrick Lassey, focused on developing and producing short documentaries about people, communities, and experiences that deserve a closer look. I'm currently developing a slate of documentary ideas and reaching out to individuals and organizations whose experiences could become the foundation for future films. The stories range from caregiving and personal struggles to unusual professions, community life, and the ways people find purpose and connection. I'm interested in the parts of people's lives that aren't always easy to explain. The difficult decisions, unexpected moments, contradictions, and small details that reveal something bigger about who we are. I want to make films that feel personal and cinematic without forcing a message or telling audiences what to think. The project is currently in development, with the first documentary to be selected as conversations with potential participants progress and production plans take shape. Completed films are intended for film festivals, public screenings, community events, educational programs, and digital platforms. The goal is to make work that reaches beyond festivals, gives audiences a chance to see the world through someone else's experience, and opens conversations that might otherwise never happen.
