In 2016 T Cat Ford and the Coffee County Historical Society founded the Coffee County Memory Project, an oral history project focusing on the federally mandated integration of the schools in the late 1960s. Fifty years after the integration of the schools in Coffee County, Georgia, community members came forward to share their experiences. Stories that had been suppressed by fear of reliving a painful past were recalled and recorded. These personal accounts are the basis of our first virtual museum exhibition, emergingVOICES of Coffee County 50th Anniversary, created with the support of Georgia Humanities. You will hear voices – many of which were silent until now – express diverse points of view. Contrasting accounts of the same incidents reveal a wide range of individual experience. As we listen to these emergingVOICES tell their stories, we gain a new understanding of others and the events comprising the shared history that has transformed our lives. emergingVOICES, part of the ongoing project Playback & FastFORWARD.
Next up:
1) Georgia Humanities has offered our Memory Project team the opportunity to create a website that will function as a tour of historic sites of Coffee County.
2)A new play for educational theatre, MIXING IT UP, is currently in pre-production for filming in order to be shared virtually during this on-going pandemic.
While our efforts span many artistic platforms our goal is the same: to bring about a greater understanding of the past so that together we can create a beneficial foundation for the future.
