The Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause (BGG2SM) is a multimedia project that engages in narrative and culture shifts work by centering the first-person narratives of Black women, genderqueer, trans, and nonbinary people through storytelling. BGG2SM is on the vanguard of creating a national and diasporic narrative and culture shift platform that normalizes menopause for Black women, genderqueer, trans, and nonbinary people. Our work is firmly anchored in North Carolina. Over the past five years, we have also expanded our reach on an international level to partner with like-minded people and organizations from the Global South.
Our efforts bridge the gap within the reproductive and gender justice movement, addressing a critical oversight by actively advocating for the needs and rights of menopausal individuals. In the realm of Southern-based reproductive and gender justice movements, there is a notable absence of programming, advocacy, and policy work centered around menopause and aging.
Since 2019, the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause has operated at the intersection of reproductive justice and storytelling as an art form. We now also understand that our work represents Socially Engaged Art Practice grounded by a political analysis, culture, art, and ritual.
