The Bronx Mural Project is a large-scale, disability-inclusive public art project bringing students, a professional muralist, artists, families, educators, businesses, community organizations, civic leaders, and neighbors together to create something permanent in the South Bronx.
In Fall 2026, students at P168X @ JHS151, a NYC Department of Education District 75 school, will work alongside internationally recognized Mexican American muralist Michelle “Mr. B Baby” Guerrero to create a permanent 2,500-square-foot mural at their school.
This is more than an opportunity to experience art. Students will participate directly in the creation of a major public artwork alongside a professional artist, contributing their ideas, creativity, and effort to something that will remain in their school community. The project is designed to expand access to meaningful artistic participation and give students the experience of seeing themselves not simply as audiences for art, but as artists, collaborators, and contributors.
The project will culminate in a free community painting-day celebration open to the public, bringing together several hundred students, families, educators, artists, community organizations, local businesses, civic leaders, and neighbors. The celebration will feature live music and speakers, local food, community resources, artwork by participating artists, and opportunities for Bronx and NYC artists to exhibit and sell their work.
The project creates value throughout the community: students gain meaningful creative opportunities; families see their children's contributions celebrated; educators gain a lasting artistic resource within their school; artists gain opportunities for visibility, participation, and sales; community organizations can connect families with resources; and local businesses and sponsors can engage directly in a community-centered cultural experience.
The finished mural will remain as a permanent cultural asset within the school, while professional photography and film documentation will extend the project's reach beyond the physical site. The Bronx Mural Project is rooted in a simple idea: belonging is created when people are invited not simply to attend, but to contribute.
