The Civility of Albert Cashier is a seven-part public humanities audio documentary podcast about Albert Cashier — an Irish immigrant from County Louth who enlisted in the 95th Illinois Infantry in 1862, fought in over forty Civil War engagements including Vicksburg, and lived as a man for the entirety of his adult life. When his birth identity was discovered in 1911, the federal pension board moved to strip his veteran's benefits. His surviving brothers in arms returned to testify on his behalf.
The series pairs original songs from the acclaimed folk/Americana musical of the same name with historical narration, archival primary sources, and expert interviews to examine how Americans have determined who belongs, who is remembered, and what communities owe those who serve them. Hosted by the show's composers, Coyote Joe Stevens and Keaton Wooden
