"Descendants of Devenishuk" - a new feature documentary film by Student Academy Award® winner Rachel Gordon Loube.
Log Line:
A young woman's quest to uncover her great-grandmother's heroic legacy and to reconnect with her family's Eastern European origins.
In the director's words:
It began with a quest to uncover my great-grandmother Rose Baker's heroic immigrant legacy and to see and feel the land she had left behind.
It has become that and much more.
The film interweaves two stories. It honors Rose's fearlessness and the boundless energy with which she helped to lead her New York immigrant community. In hundreds of pages of handwritten Yiddish, she recorded their work in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
It also presents my own journey to her town in Lithuania and my encounters with the land and people there.
By sharing Rose's never-before-translated records, along with the stories of non-Jewish Lithuanians whom I met, my film will address, in a personal way, the loss inflicted by the Holocaust that continues to impact many of us, generations later.
