For the last 23 years of her life, artist/filmmaker Faith Hubley started the day by drawing a self-portrait in her journal and she continued doing so every day, until just before her death in 2001.
The Faith Journal Project presents six 40-minute loops, each of which combines 1400 portraits with captions from associated entries, and hundreds of drawings and clips from the journals and films produced during the relevant time.
The video sample (above) presents three screens-in-progress, with temp music by Georgia Hubley who, with her Yo La Tengo band mates, Ira Kaplan and James McNew, is creating an original score for the installation.
Faithy, hey , a 4-minute short related to this project, has screened at several Film Festivals and aired on NJ PBS in the Fall of 2021, and in early 2022. For a private link, email emily.hubley@gmail.com
The faces, words and images of the installation appear in chronological order, following Faith’s life from her adjustment to widowhood, recovery from breast cancer, and through grand-motherhood and her continued struggles and joys as an artist in New York.
The work at hand involves choosing and placing the art and words, editing the screens in connection with the score (in-progress), and choosing the changing colors. What began as row of constant screens has evolved into a syncopated arrangement, where various elements - including faces which come to life! - bounce from screen to screen while playing with the sound.
