About

The Humanist Project

We are all born capable of having and expressing the full range of human experience. In order to fit in, we begin to manage and limit the scope of who we are. Because of this the Humanist Project believes artists and their communities have become disempowered. We bring only particular parts of our humanity to our work, play and expression. And so the “great debate” of who we are and what we should do is happening among a few individuals instead of the entire community. Using performance as a vehicle, The Humanist Project is a theater company that is asking the artist to bring all the elements of their spirit to their work and to integrate those elements more fully. We ask our artistic community to consider New York City as a provocative creative opportunity. We are creating new customs in and out of the studio to unify our voice, play, movement, and thought. The Humanist Project is bringing these new customs to classrooms and studios of all skill levels. We are using these new customs in creating original work and in staging existing works with humanist themes for public performance. The Humanist Project is interested in a performance style that provokes our audience to ask same questions we are asking of ourselves, without lecturing or providing answers.
We believe that by making the audience a necessary part of performance we awaken that which is already within them. The desire to engage more fully in their Lives, Work and Play.
