The cinematic arts, the moving image in all its evolving forms, has become so powerfully immersive, and so embedded and pervasiveness in our daily lives, that its’ personal, cultural, and social influence is indisputable. While a vast array of creative and technological tools and techniques have been developed over time to create increasingly more powerfully effective cinematic realities, in many ways we are only beginning to tap into the potential power of the medium to effect deep and profound transformation on an individual and collective level. Throughout the history of the medium, cinematic artists and theorists have tapped into the well of the potential power of the medium by applying theories and practices from various other domains of human knowledge, including other artistic mediums, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and the physical and applied sciences. The application of Integral Theory, a meta-theory that attempts to integrate all these other domains of human knowledge into a comprehensive neutral framework, has the potential to take the medium to a whole new level with the estimated potential benefits of: The creation and reception of more powerful and effective cinematic realities that could potentially induce transformative states of consciousness, and stimulate shifts in stages of human development and the evolution of consciousness; the capacity to establish more creatively fulfilling, healthy, efficient, and cost-effective production workflows; an increased ability to target and reach desired audiences; an enhanced aptitude for comprehending and navigating the rapidly evolving and convergent cinematic media environment; and the fostering of a greater understanding of the cinematic medium itself.
The Integral Cinema Project is a research, production and educational initiative exploring the application of Integral Theory for cinematic theory, development, production and distribution. A comprehensive model for Integral cinematic media theory and practice will be developed and tested through the creation of a series of short cinematic experiments and a feature-length narrative transmedia project. This research endeavor will be documented in a documentary and the results disseminated through various publications, media, and educational workshops.
