The Interstitial is a producing partnership between
Erica Wray and
Morgan Grambo dedicated to amplifying exciting new works by playwrights and theatermakers. New plays can often flounder in the spaces that exist between
generation | exploration | presentation. We are interested in providing resources to embrace these interstitial moments in artistic development and support the playwrights in these unmoored periods in a project’s lifespan. The Interstitial gravitates toward scripts and projects that frequently fall “inbetween” our understanding of traditional new work development.
IN | BETWEEN The Interstitial is agile enough to meet each piece we encounter at its unique point of development. We take a creative, dramaturgical approach to the scripts in this program. We are drawn to projects that are complicated to navigate on the page alone and are in need of collaboration with actors, movement experts, and can be solved in a rehearsal room on our feet instead of at a table. In the past this has included a facilitated conversation with a gymnastics coach to better understand how to use gymnastics in a play; an on-your-feet staging on the backdrop of a cardboard set with fully realized puppets in order to test out world building; and casting a silent Butoh dancer as a ghost figure in a staged reading.
IN | PRODUCTIONThe Interstitial occasionally produces mission-aligned new work. We are pleased to have been artistically involved with C. Meaker's
You Must Wear a Hat and Charles Green's
In the Castle of Eternal Sunset: A Module for Ten 0th Level Characters.
IN | CAHOOTSIN | CAHOOTS is a new opportunity for director/playwright/dramaturg teams to access discounted resources and producing support from The Interstitial for a staged reading of a new play. Hand off time-consuming producing tasks (securing rehearsal and venue space, industry and general invitations, light marketing, and more) to The Interstitial, allowing artists to focus on the work.
