Jamie Baum Septet+ Recording Update #5Dear Awesome Backers, As we near the release date of What Times Are These, which is this Friday (can't believe it, finally!), I wanted to be sure you all had received your CDs or downloads? I'd hoped to be able to mail them all at the same time, but as I'd previously mentioned, the PO would only let me mail 10 at a time! I'm leaving for a tour of Europe next week and so if you have not received yours, please let me know asap! Jamie Baum Septet+ Recording Update #4Dear Awesome Backers. Just a couple of quick updates! After spending hours packaging and addressing 80 CDs to send you on Monday, as promised, I got to the post office and was told I'm only allowed to send 10 at a time!! Yeesh! So, I have been making a few trips and wanted to let you know some of you will receive your CD sooner than others (the order was done completely arbitrarily), though all will be mailed out by Friday! Since the CD release day by Sunnyside Records is April 5th, they will allow me to email the downloads a week or so before, and I will send you an email about that soon! A reminder to hold May 7th for the CD-release gig at Drom in NYC! One set only at 7pm!!! And a couple of nice things to share: Our first review! Jamie Baum Septet+ Recording Update #3Dear Awesome Backers, I'm excited that in a few days, March 10th to be exact, I'll begin mailing out your CDs...and just a few days later will send download links! As promised, you will definitely receive the music before the general public and while it has felt like a long time coming, I thank you for your patience and can't wait for you to hear the music! Some of you have also purchased tiers that include scores, lessons and/or a Zoom Masterclass Hang, etc. I've thought about it and think it makes sense before setting up dates and sending scores, that it would be best for you to first have the recording to become familiar with the music. This will offer time to to make your score choices and formulate any questions or comments. I'll be in touch about that in a month or so. One last thing I'd mentioned before...I'm super excited that I've managed to get all of the musicians together for a CD-release performance of the music from the CD! We are only doing one show this spring and hope you'll mark you calendars and get your tickets before they 'sell out! I hope this email finds you well! Though it's been a while since I've been in touch, I've been very busy with each step of this process, moving closer to the release of the recording...and getting more and more excited as I go. And honestly, you are always on my mind since without your help, all of this would not have been possible! So...first up! PLEASE save these dates! While the Sunnyside Records release date for What Times Are These is officially April 5th, with such a large band, finding a time when everyone was available, in NYC and not on tour was no small feat! So we will gather to do our CD-release concert celebration on May 7th, at Drom, NYC with a start time of 7pm! Drom is a very special venue, in the very "colorful" East Village of NYC, that presents great music, serves delicious Mediterranean food and has a fantastic drink selection. While they haven't yet generated a ticket link or post on their website, I wanted you to be the first to know so you can mark it in your calendar and save the date! It will be the ONLY album-release performance we'll do until the fall and we'd be so happy if you'd join us to share this special night! Jamie Baum Septet+ Recording Update #1Dear Awesome Backers,
As we near the Thanksgiving holiday, my favorite, I can't help but feel so much gratitude for all of your support and generosity! As we look all around us during these challenging times, I find it immensely helpful to focus on these things. I'm also feeling so grateful because just yesterday, I handed in my finished master and all of the graphics and photos for the liner notes/CD cover and booklet to Sunnyside Records to be sent off for manufacturing. OMG, I"m so excited and can't wait to see the final product! The recording sounds amazing...and that is thanks to all of you for allowing me the many extra days of mixing and editing it took to get there, not to mention getting it mastered by someone with the most exquisite ears! I'm in the process of starting to organize some CD-release concerts for after the release in April, which is of course, a whole other challenge with an ensemble of this size. If you know of any venues that would be right for this project, and/or would like to bring us to "your neck of the woods," please let me know. Thank you!!! We made it to the finish line!I just wanted to thank you all so much! I am ecstatic and so appreciative that over 130 backers have made it possible for me to reach my "prioritized" goal to fund the percussion overdubs, editing, mixing and mastering of my recording!!! In addition to now having the resources to take these next steps in the way I'd hoped, this is a wonderful boost of "wind at my back" that will surely carry me through!

We are just 4 days away from the end of this campaign (Thursday, August 10th, 11:30pm, to be exact) and I want to share a few thoughts in addition to Fractured Atlas’ crowd-funding recommendations: Gratitude!!! I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to all of you for backing my recording! It’s truly humbling to have over one hundred of you offer your support and show your interest in my work. I’m well aware that it is not an easy time for many, so choosing to contribute is truly appreciated! Michael Corleone from The Godfather To be honest, my friends often tease me by reciting the line from the Godfather, “Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in,” because this is my 5th large ensemble recording and the cost is always prohibitive! I keep threatening that my next recording will feature just a duo or trio…but composing for this size ensemble is just way too much fun! Fractured Atlas Tutorials and Recommendations Fractured Atlas is a wonderful platform/organization that works with artists offering 501C fiscal sponsorship, advice and support, in addition to a website for fundraising. Before launching my campaign they gave me suggestions, tutorials and a final approval. Topics included: 1) When to fundraise and what to ask for: While they recommended the importance of setting realistic goals based on funds required to finish the project, and to be clear and specific with your backers by identifying what their donations will be used for, they also suggested to not shy away from asking for the amount you really need. Box checked! They also urged to avoid fundraising during the summer months when most people are on vacation, spending discretionary funds on travel, and not feeling particularly flush! OOPS! So…on to the next section of their tutorial… 2) What to do if you’re close to the end of your campaign and haven’t reached your goal: Unlike “Kickstarter,” Fractured Atlas does not require that you meet your financial goal in order to keep the funds, yay! They do however suggest that if you find yourself not reaching your goal, to “prioritize and incentivize”! Prioritize: While I would have loved to raise the total amount projected, I’m incredibly excited that I’m so close to the amount required for the editing/mixing and mastering portion!!! The remainder of the expenses for a publicist, etc. aren’t needed until late Fall….and those of you who know me, know I’ll find a way to make that happen. So, no worries…this recording will get finished and you will receive your rewards as scheduled! Incentivize: THE BIG BLOWOUT OFFER!! Our Story
The Band:
The Jamie Baum Septet+, formed in 1999, has recorded four award-winning CDs (the last three on Sunnyside Records), and performed internationally at major festivals and venues including the Monterey Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Jazztopad, San Jose Jazz, Earshot Jazz Festival, Winter Jazzfest, Dizzy’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, Kennedy Center, Jazz Gallery, Kuumbwa, Bimhuis, The Outpost, Unterfahrt, etc.
Receiving stellar reviews in all relevant publications including The New York Times, their many accolades brought the recognition of "Best Midsize Ensemble of 2014” (Jazz Journalists Assn.) along with Wayne Shorter and Steve Coleman; and their CD Bridges was listed in the JazzTimes 10: Essential Jazz Flute Albums and voted #4 for “Best New Release” in their 2018 Readers Poll.
The Concept:
On their long-awaited fifth album recorded April 10/11, 2023, Baum’s music once again took a significant shift in direction and a giant step forward in both her compositional acuity and ambitious scope.
In this formidable outing, Jamie composed music using poems to illustrate the palpable, personal and communal experience of living in the time of COVID-19, the simultaneous socio-political climate and its abrupt transformation of our world. From her Hell’s Kitchen, NYC perspective (initially the US “epicenter” of COVID-19), Jamie looked to other artistic platforms* for hope, solace and inspiration. She chose women poets of various ages and ethnicities, and utilized their poems in some cases as inspiration, and in others as “spoken word,” lyrics, or effects, including: “To Be of Use” by Marge Piercy, "My Grandmother in the Stars” by Naomi Shihab Nye, "An Old Story” by Tracy K. Smith, “sorrow song” by Lucille Clifton, etc.
Baum’s compositions, like the poems themselves, paint an emotionally charged landscape, suggesting symbolically and vividly how we arrived at this moment and how we might manage, learn and emerge from the experience, while offering reflection and an uplifting, joyful, mesmerizing experience.

- I’ve always wanted to compose for GRAMMY-nominated Theo Bleckmann who’s been described as “from another planet” (New York Times) and “brilliant” (New York Magazine), and I couldn’t be more thrilled by his participation or wow'd by his contribution!
- Transplanted to NYC from Portugal in 2008, and voted 2020 NPR Jazz Vocalist, Sara Serpa has become known for exploring the use of the voice as an instrument, and surely brings that beautiful, heart-felt blend to this recording.
- I first heard recently-awarded Guggenheim Fellow Kokayi Walker with Steve Coleman’s Five Elements and Terri Lyne Carrington’s “Social Science,” was blown away and knew he would be perfect for Lucille Clifton's “sorrow song”…and he was!
- Aubrey Johnson is a New York-based vocalist/composer who specializes in jazz and creative contemporary music with and without words…as she demonstrates so gracefully, magically and accurately on What Times Are These.
What Times Are These was recorded April 10/11, 2023 at Oktaven Audio Studios, Mt. Vernon, NY, with a fantastic team led by engineer, Ryan Streber, and I couldn’t be more excited by the results!
In the control room, wearing his “producer” hat, multi-talented pianist/composer/arranger, Mike Holober tapped his honed instincts to help with everything from shaping the music, keeping track of takes and fixes, to ever-so-gently suggesting that “going for another take” or “tuning-up again might be a good idea”…among several other responsibilities!
Timeline:
The album will be edited and mixed by engineer Brian Montgomery, who did our previous recording, Bridges. Brian has some of the best ears in the business and his attention to detail is nothing short of breathtaking. I’ll work with Brian this summer and can’t wait to get started!
When the mixes are complete, they’ll be mastered by wizard Mark Wilder, who did my last two recordings. His list of credits is crazy long, mastering a range of hit records from Dylan to Scofield. In fact, the first time I worked with him he was in the middle of re-mastering Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue,” and let me hold the original reels! OMG, the holy grail!
We expect to finish all of the post-production activities (liner notes/booklet, art work, press release, etc.) this fall and will release What Times Are These April 5th, 2024, on Sunnyside.
As backers, you’ll be the first to receive your copies. While I can’t yet tell you the specific date, I can assure you it will be well before the public release and will keep you posted! Backers who opt for physical media will have their albums and/or scores shipped a minimum of one month prior to the official release date.
Why Crowdfunding?
As you might imagine, recording an album with an 8-piece ensemble, four guest vocalists, guest percussionist and a producer…in addition to recording costs, editing/mixing/mastering, etc.…well it is quite an expensive endeavor! We’ve recorded over 75 minutes of beautiful, intricate and soulful music, and want to present it in all its vivid detail and highest quality audio.
The truth is…that while I received a much-appreciated grant from the Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation to put towards this project, I’ve had to lay out quite a huge chunk of my own funds to get this far and simply can’t finish this record without your help. Every dollar you contribute will bring me one step closer to my goal of making the kind of world-class recording I believe this music, and the amazing musicians who’ve brought it to life, merit…and I can’t wait to share it with you!
What Will Your Contribution Fund?
All funds raised in this campaign will go towards studio time and those involved in bringing this project to the finish line, including editing/mixing and mastering engineers. In addition, it will fund post-production costs that are so essential in today’s music business - publicists, creation of a promo video, press and radio promotion, etc. With so much "product" being put out there on a daily basis, in order to get one's recording noticed it has become a non-negotiable necessity (itemized costs below**).
One bit of great news: working with Fractured Atlas means that as a backer, any contributions you make to this campaign above market value are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

*The Longer Story (or…a little more detail if you feel like reading):
As a performing/touring artist, when COVID-19 hit in 2020, the complete shut down of all performances, rehearsals and “in-person” teaching was jarring and disorienting to say the least! Its impact suggested…that for the foreseeable future and perhaps substantially for the long term, there’d be unquantifiable consequences for myself and other artists.
So, in that initial phase of the pandemic I looked to other artistic platforms for hope and inspiration. One such example was Bill Moyers’ website series, “A Poet a Day,” which introduced poets and their chosen pandemic/socially relevant poems offered in written and video form, spoken by the poets themselves. From that platform I chose poems I thought I could work with that moved me.
Composed for my eight-piece ensemble, The Jamie Baum Septet+, this suite of music features the instrumentation (with doubles) of flute/alto flute/flute with pedals, trumpet/flugelhorn, alto sax/clarinet/bass clarinet, French horn, guitar, piano/Fender Rhodes, acoustic bass/electric bass guitar, drums, percussion and singing bowls...with Jonathan and me trying our hand at "spoken word."
In addition, guest vocalists Theo Bleckmann, Sara Serpa, Aubrey Johnson and Kokayi Walker committed to read the texts as “spoken word” and/or sing those that are notated. I was very excited for the opportunity to work with these vocalists, not only because the breadth of their combined experiences, technical abilities, openness for embracing unexpected challenges, and vocal colors would elevate the depth of my compositions and my bandmates’ playing, but because it represented a completely new direction for me - working with texts, vocalists and the sound component of the voice in this context. This is something I'd never done before! These compositions incorporate the use of words in various, and sometimes unusual and unpredictable ways depending on the intent of the poem and the vibe/conceptual imagery being conveyed.
