The Journal Project is a multifaceted art exhibit - which includes 30 pieces of artwork and narrative inspired by the artist, who has kept a journal over the past 40 years. Her stories mirror many of our own - weaving us all together in a familiar fabric. As a visual artist she understands the power of art and storytelling, and combined together, how profoundly these can resonate with the viewer. It is exceptionally rare to be invited into another person’s world so intimately. And in doing so, the artist opens the door for viewers to be vulnerable themselves and perhaps discover a path toward growth and healing. Her stories involve the years of bigotry and injustice that she endured growing up Gay. But it also resonates deeply with other people about their own trials and tribulations that we all face through our lifetime, in our relationships with our parents and family, and finding ourselves, and finally gaining self acceptance. In our current time when life’s anxieties and uncertainties are so much in the forefront of our world, The Journal Project exhibit is a potentially healing outlet using art journaling as a creative form for expression. The artist’s greatest wish is that after engaging with The Journal Project, the viewer is inspired to keep a journal, make their own art, or pursue their own creative outlet.
The exhibit is a compelling visual tool that creates the dialog that addresses the current wave of bigotry reasserting itself across this country. The changing demographics of our world create space for new conversations and new avenues to deliver those conversations. The Journal Project exhibit is just one such avenue to potentially building bridges of mutual respect in those conversations.
