The Mischlinge Project

Highlighting Mischlinge and converts through history, to soften the lines that divide us.

About

The Mischlinge Exposé is a many-layered multimedia performance centering around my family history and personal experience with Judaism. The hour-long performance seamlessly interweaves the music and writings of prominent converts with testimony of my father's and godmother's experiences in Germany during the war. Performances of works by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, Arnold Schoenberg, Alexander Zemlinsky, and Gustav Mahler illustrate the emotions described by Rachel Varnhagen and Heinrich Heine. Through the lens of historical context and the artistic and poetic testimony of prominent Mischlinge and converts, the performance traces my story of conversion from Judaism to Christianity and back to Judaism, as a part of a larger historical narrative of conversion going back to before the war.
