Rand and Robyn Miller grew up with parents who encouraged a love of travel, exploration and new cultures. The elder Rand developed a taste for games and computers, while Robyn had a wider range of artistic interests, including drawing, painting, cinema and music. Together they combined their talents to work on video games for kids (Manhole, Cosmic Osmo). Influenced by the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, they expanded to more complex puzzle games for adults, based on imagination and discovery.
Working from separate homes in different parts of Spokane, WA, Rand and Robyn realized that the new digital technologies just bursting on the scene, such as Hypercard and the Macintosh computer, could be used as artistic tools to tell a story. After months of experimentation with very limited graphics tools at hand, they created Myst, a virtual world made of separate islands that are navigable by solving a series of puzzles. Once released on CD-ROM, Myst exceeded all expectations of success, which led to much more elaborate sequel projects (Riven, Uru), entirely new game worlds (Obduction, Firmament) and a virtual-reality reboot of the original Myst game.
30 years later, Myst is still going strong at the company they founded, Cyan Worlds. It continues to attract new fans and directly inspires a new generation of avid gamers. The Myst Documentary explores the intricate dynamic of the two Miller brothers and how they combined their disparate talents to create a lasting digital work of art. We also meet with family members, game designers and key influencers who passed along their knowledge that inspired Myst.
