Organizations The Trojan Women is supporting

We are excited to announce the organizations we will be donating to via the sale of pins at the show. All profits from the sales will got to the  UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency and Bond Street Theatre

UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency "strives to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to eventually return home, integrate or resettle."

Bond Street Theatre  is a New York based theatre company that was founded in 1976 by Joanna Sherman and Patrick Sciarratta. Today, Bond Street Theatre spends much of its time working internationally. Their mission is to initiate "theatre-based projects for conflict resolution, education and empowerment in critical areas worldwide." The company develops creative programming that addresses international human rights issues, educates youth, amplifies marginalized voices, and promotes the value of the arts in peacebuilding. Bond Street Theatre has initiated innovative arts and theatre-based programs in over 40 countries worldwide, reaching individuals in refugee camps, schools, shelters, prisons, rural areas and urban centers through mobile theatre performances, capacity-building programs for local CSOs, media outreach, trainings, and collaboration with local organizations.

We are proud to support these two amazing organizations!

The Trojan Women is the final show in our 2017 Season. It is our biggest production yet. We found a wonderful, unique venue, housed in an old church. We will be running for three weeks, our longest run to date, giving our audiences more chances to see this show, which we feel is incredibly timely and important. We have assembled the a supremely talented cast of 11 and an amazing creative team of 10.

Each Thursday, post-show forums will be held with individuals working in/with the refugee and immigrant communities. The goal is to raise awareness about women refugees in our modern political climate at the local, national, and international level and to create an opportunity for the arts to intersect with activism.

As part of The New Collectives' 2017 season mission of giving back both artistically and financially, we will be collecting donations at the show for refugee and immigrant organization(s) through the sale of pins featuring text from the play.

We were drawn to this play - though it was written thousands of years ago - as the issues it addresses are still, sadly, extremely relevant in today's world. The translation we are using is by Irish poet Brendan Kennelly. He originally wrote it as a response to the Bosnian War. We chose this translation as we feel retains the poetic nature of the play while using modern, accessible language.

Your donations will directly go to help cover the costs of this ambitious show:
  • Performance venue costs - running for three weeks is well worth it, but certainly costs more.
  • Rehearsal space rental - the rents in NYC aren't just sky high for apartments
  • Insurance costs - safety first is our motto
  • Production design costs - our actors need to be clothed and lit
And most importantly...
  • Pay our cast and creative team - all 21 individuals involved are giving so much of their energy, time, and talents to this pieces and we would like to fairly compensated them.
