The New Wild
We broaden the spectrum of values through the stories we tell on stage, and in so doing, broaden the understanding of what an American story is. We are dedicated to advancing stories by and about women, people of color, and other underrepresented voices on the American stage. In order to achieve this, we make art of the highest quality. We make work that is heartfelt, large, and edgy with emotion and narrative at its core. We tell important stories in a rigorous, dynamic, and culturally-specific way.
Marina McClure (Director) creates emotionally charged theater, opera, and spectacles by fusing striking visual design and physical work with performers. She helms the multi-disciplinary art lab The New Wild, is a resident director at the Flea Theater, and a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab. Recent projects include CasablancaBox (2017 Drama Desk Nomination for Unique Theatrical Experience), a concert of Tear a Root from the Earth, a new folk musical for Afghanistan composed by Johnny Walsh and Qais Essar at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, the site-specific premiere of Leisure, Labor, Lust, an epic play cycle about class in America, at The Mount in Lenox, MA, and a giant puppet parade and large-scale community performance for the Tony-winning Handspring Puppet Company in celebration of South Africa's National Day of Reconciliation. She teaches directing at The National Theater Institute at the O’Neill and frequently directs at Dartmouth, Brown, and NYU-Tisch. Upcoming: Letters from Home (Independent Shakes Co; UCSD), the story of a Cambodian musician who flees the Khmer Rouge for America. MFA: CalArts. www.marinamcclure.com
