On February 25, 2002, a baby girl was placed in her mother's arms at the Guangzhou Social Welfare Institute in China. On February 25, 2027 — exactly twenty-five years later — that daughter will stand in front of that same building and release three red balloons into the sky: one for her birth mother, one for her orphanage nanny, one for her Chinese foster mother. The Red Thread Journey is a multiplatform documentary storytelling experience rooted in the Chinese adoptee diaspora — and the origin story of The Red Balloon Foundation, which will fund heritage trips for the 160,000 families worldwide who cannot afford to go back.
