A new play set in a Chinese Van Gogh factory makes its Off-Broadway debut at BBTF 2025
"The Rice Eaters" by Yide Cai at Broadway Bound Theatre Festival 2025
Selected for BBTF 2025, The Rice Eaters is a bold new play about ambition, exploitation, and the true cost of art—set in a Chinese Van Gogh factory and debuting in New York City.
The Rice Eaters is a new play by Yide Cai making its Off-Broadway debut at the 2025 Broadway Bound Theatre Festival. Set in Dafen Village, a Chinese art factory that mass-produces Van Gogh replicas, the story explores labor, ambition, and authorship through a surreal, multilingual lens. The production is led by a fully Chinese creative team with plans for a cross-border remount in Shenzhen.
